Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology conducted a series of experiments and came to a clear conclusion:
There is an optimal eyelash length that provides effective aerodynamic protection for the eye.
Why is length so important?
When eyelashes are in optimal proportion—about one-third of the eye's length—then:
- a protective layer of air (circulation) is created when blinking, reducing the evaporation of moisture from the eye's surface;
- the airflow over the cornea is slowed, minimizing irritation;
- Eyelashes reduce the penetration of dust and dirt particles by about 50% – a value proven in experiments.
That's precisely why eyes feel most comfortable when the eyelash length is just right – and not as long as possible.
What happens when eyelashes are too short or too sparse?
Even eyelashes that are too short or grow sparsely cannot adequately fulfill their protective function:
- they hardly retain any dust,
- they don't protect the cornea from drying out,
- and make the eyes more vulnerable overall.
In such cases, eyelash extensions can certainly be a good solution – but only if the stylist expertly selects the length, weight, and stress on the natural eyelashes.
What does this mean for lash stylists?
This research confirms once again:
- Eyelashes that are too long are not an optimal solution for the client – even if she wants them "as long as possible";
- In their work, it's not just about appearance, but also about the physiology of the eye;
- The correctly chosen length improves comfort, durability, and the quality of the result.
